Like most people, you probably leave some extra space in your baggage when going on a vacation so you can bring back some souvenirs. We tend to plan ahead of time what we are going to do on vacation. So, why wouldn’t we also make a plan to be healthy on vacation, too?
On vacation, you will be tempted with cuisine and cocktails that you probably don’t have back home. This is your time to relax and be less active. Although you should indeed relax and enjoy yourself, you should also be a bit careful. If you are not careful, you may come back with extra weight. No matter whether you travel to Canada, Europe or Asia, these 5 tips will help you stay healthy and fit on vacation.
Choose Exercises and Activities that You Enjoy
If you don’t like running, you don’t have to run every day. If you don’t like going to the gym, you don’t have to go. Instead, choose activities that you enjoy and that are naturally aerobic. For example, a vacation is a great time to walk more, wander, swim, dance and simply move around. To stay fit, just choose activities that are fun and active.
Visit a Spa Center
If you ever need an excuse to take in the spa on vacation, you should know that spa centers can improve your health. Wellness centers provide stress relief and can ease muscle pain and other body aches. Many destinations have their own spa cultures that you’ll definitely want to discover.
Enjoy the Food without any Guilt
You are on vacation, and you should definitely enjoy the local cuisine. Traveling without trying the food is a big mistake because you will be missing out on a huge part of experiencing a local culture. However, in order to avoid weight gain, we suggest avoiding junk food and treats you typically eat. Try to make healthier choices. Only 20% of your daily food should be a treat, and 80% should be healthy food consisting of lean proteins and high fiber.
Pack with Health in Mind
When packing, keep your health in mind too and bring things that will keep your body going strong. Make sure you bring sunblock to avoid sunburn. Depending on the destination you are visiting, you may want to bring an insect repellent. Pack necessary medications, as well as some OTC meds for headaches, indigestion, antihistamines and similar. Lastly, you should always have antiseptic hand wipes and sanitizer in your bag.
When you are traveling to and from destinations, it affects your body. You will be crossing time zones, changing altitudes and be around people with varying states of health. To stay healthy, it’s important not to forget to eat and to drink plenty of water. You may spend a lot of time sightseeing, so always bring a healthy snack and a bottle of water with you to give your body the energy it needs. Also, make sure you get enough sleep before and during your vacation.
Lastly, when you come home, give yourself a break. Rushing back into regular work and life is not easy, so consider giving yourself one extra day of break to catch up on the laundry, spend some time with friends and to simply relax from the trip.
